Happy Day of the Dead!

It is a Mexican tradition (celebrated also in other countries in Latin America) where we remember those loved ones that departed to the afterlife and feel closer to them.

We believe their souls visit us after midnight in November 2nd and families prepare an offering to guide them, feed their hunger and quench their thirst after the long trip!!!

In the morning we eat the leftovers to share a moment with them before they depart to the afterlife.

The Wanderer

Wandering into darkness, in a cold and quiet night

A broken soul slowly moves through the long chasm, .

Between shadows and sea, the tired soul finally sits near water.

The soul is confused and stares at an old vessel, filled with grief.

There’s no light or warmth in this vessel, time seems to have stopped…

Submerged deep in the shadows, the last few memories of this vessel will slowly vanish…

The Soul observes and thinks…

Will the Sun shine as bright as before? Was this vessel happy? Was I loved?

The soul touches the vessel and quickly devours the last few memories…

An empty meal filled with sadness, the empty vessel… was it a part of me?

I can feel it painfully drifting through the sea of life, full of hope.

The tale of this sad broken ship, now stranded, and forgotten to all.

I still can feel pain… this vessel was yearning for a touch of love.

Anchored into nothingness, unable to sail… the vessel can’t dream now.

Lost in a lifetime of darkness, chained to regrets and failures.

It was built on dreams that will never be, just like me…

Am I a lost hope?

No one will touch this crippled vessel again; will someone love me?

The soul stares at the empty vessel one last time, weeping crystal shards

Her eyes close slowly and prays, pain is mixed with disappointment and fear

Frozen in an eternal night and hopeless, the vessel is lost into nothingness

The soul wonders around and reflects for a moment, then sings a broken song…

Finally, a silent farewell, no more tears, breaths into the light and remembers…

Lake Crawford

Deep in a forest blessed by the Iroquoians there’s Lake Crawford, a mystical lake that tells us many stories…

Located in Ontario, Canada, the mystical Lake Crawford is a very special lake, a time capsule that has captured instants, stories, and dreams for hundreds of years…

Discovered deep in a forest blessed by the Iroquoians, you can reach the lake by following a beautiful trail that will immerse you in the lake’s magic. As you approach it, you can feel the presence of the same water sprites that observed our ancestors… today they are granting us visitors safe passage and a moment of peace and hope.

Ofelia and I visit the lake often and like to sit next to the shore and just dream about that song, sweet notes that someone used to sing in that same spot, long time ago… I wonder, is this another memory engraved on the immense layer of our time? Will the water sprites remember the moments we shared with them? Will they sing a song about our visit to new explorers, hundreds of years later?

Time seems to stop as I listen to Ofelia, singing that beautiful song, I shed some tears and close my eyes… The wind, shy and fast, disperses her sweet notes throughout the lake…  We know it is time, Ofelia and I hold our trusty Lumix cameras tightly, and feel the lake spirits smile, as they allow us to capture this instant, a moment in the life of the amazing lake.

About Lake Crawford:

Lake Crawford is a meromictic lake, which means the layers of water on the lake do not mix, making it the perfect time capsule as it is gives us a full picture of what happened in the past, for example researchers were able to determine the location of an Iroquoian settlement as corn pollen was found in a layer about 600 years old by researchers.

Here’s an incredible article of Lake Crawford by the Washington Post, highly recommended: https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/interactive/2023/anthropocene-geologic-time-crawford-lake/

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

This weekend Ofelia and I commemorated the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We took this opportunity to reflect on the history and legacy of the Residential School system, remember the victims and survivors, and honour the strength and resilience demonstrated by Indigenous Peoples and Communities across Canada.

We acknowledge the land in which we are grateful to live, on the traditional land of the Mississaugas of the Credit, which is part of the Anishinaabe Nation that extends from the Niagara Peninsula across Hamilton to Rouge River Valley.

The territory is mutually covered by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Iroquois Confederacy, the Ojibway, and other allied Nations to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. We are deeply grateful to be able to work on this land, and we recognize that its original inhabitants are First Nation and Metis people.

Thank you Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation for sharing your traditional territory with us.

Love,

Ofelia and Raul

Harvest Moon

Have you ever heard the legend of a Moon of milk and honey, the magical Harvest Moon?

On a beautiful autumn night, I took a walk downtown Burlington Ontario to search for her…

The sweet scent of pumpkin spice lattes and warm apple pie enfolded my senses.

An unusually busy Friday night, moon watchers were drinking spiced apple cider.

Lovers holding hearts and hands, friends engaging in meaningless conversations.

Silly seagulls surveying the ancient waters of Lake Ontario for one last tasty meal.

As I approached the Burlington Pier, a cool damp breeze ached my hearth.

The western skies heralded the crepuscular light with an orange glow.

To the east, a splash of darkness was quickly encroaching the urban sky.

A veil of clouds was covering the horizon, I looked for her and couldn’t find her...

As time went by, some moon watchers lost hope and got engulfed into darkness.

I started to worry… will I lose my dreams again? will I dissolve into nothingness?

My broken body was tired and asked me to run, disappear into the night,

My soul thirsty for redemption, convinced me setup my gear and stay.

My trusty Lumix G95 camera was ready, I stood there, in peaceful tranquillity.

The prolonged silence was unexpectedly broken by the sound of gospel.

A sweet family of singers filled the air with their pious allegory chants.

Hope for a miracle sojourn grow; the unbroken faith was contagious…

And then it happened, suddenly, the harvest Goddess graced us with her presence…

Breaking the cloudy chains that held her captive, she sat there, illuminating the night sky.

A moon that sings a song of forgiveness… I smiled and gazed at her eternal beauty.

My soul was ecstatic and basked on the warmth possibilities of her healing light…

And what else is for me to do? I held my trusty Lumix G95 and captured the moment…

Lovers continued holding hearts and hands, friends kept engaging in meaningless conversations.

It felt like time stood still, I thanked here one more time and quietly disappeared into the night.

Silver Linings

On a cold September night, I thought I heard whispers from Aurora Borealis, the majestic queen of the northern skies, luring me away from my deep slumber. I took my gear and traveled north, on what looked like a wonderful night adventure. Fall had arrived; a warm colour permeated the road ahead, another instant woven in my life-long tapestry of “happy little accidents”.

After what felt like an eternity I arrived at my destination of Port Elgin, Ontario, located on the southeast shores of Lake Huron; a small, beautiful port embraced by the arms of Mother Nature.

Parking next to the lake and dismounting from my ride, I could feel the soft yet stinging caress of an icy breeze; I had to be quick setting up my trusty Lumix G95 camera, warm cookies, and tea and of course, my comfy chair. I looked around and pondered “was she finally here?”

As I heard the soft and melodical sounds of friendship, I was hopeful - was my audience granted? Gazing up at the north star Polaris, a piercing darkness surrounded me, so I stood there for some time, watching - and waiting. My senses continued to heighten; a wild coyote sang a gloomy song, a fish was dancing on the water ever so slowly, a pair of old grey socks rested on the sandy shore with its own memories of another moment.

As time continued to pass, I came to the realization that it was not meant to be; the splendour of the regal lady of the north was not going to show herself to me that night; frustrated, I looked down and whispered “maybe another time, maybe another place”.

My soul finally got to a resolution as light needles carved the midnight sky, I decided to just enjoy a kind instant with warm friendships. I pointed my trusty Lumix north and let her paint the starry night, witness the decisive moment.

I stood there in silence, grateful. The night had given me the silver linings I desperately needed, disguised as a dream. A dream of light and darkness, I embraced this cosmic instant…

At the end, there was only a faint smile, dried tears on my cheeks and the smell of mint and cocoa, not so distant…

Aluminum Birds…

Ever wonder what flies over your head when you sleep? No? Am I the only one?

Well. I do. I sometimes dream of flying on top of a majestic bird in the middle of the night and be amazed by the sight of electric torches that burn bright next to our homes, almost guarding us.

That curiosity kept me awake that night, observing the beautiful Milton Skyline…. Milton is a vibrant city located in the Halton Region, Ontario Canada…

I noticed my feathery friends were all asleep, but something else was spreading its wings in the dark blue skies… aluminum birds enroute to their nest, Pearson Airport, all flying in curious patterns, guided by the same torches who showed them the way home… what a beautiful sight…

I smiled and captured this instant with my trusty @Lumix G95 camera, an instant in the life of thousands of souls that fly on aluminum birds….

Was I awake or dreaming again?

Seven Souls

Across the northern shores of Tobermory Ontario

You can find Flowerpot Island; a mythical place on Lake Huron,

An island that tells a story of the hope and a long-lost love

It is the home of a mystical warrior who protects us from afar.

Seven souls traveled to adventure on the island, dreaming to go far

After what felt like a long dream, our souls woke up on the island

Midnight loomed, a ritual began, light and shadows prepared to duel,

Fearless adversaries focused in a battle that made animals fear and hide

The same anger and trepidation of the lost warriors returned to the island

Looking for justice, an everlasting skirmish started; will anyone win this war?

Suddenly, liquid arrows pierced through the sky, and we hid under the trees

As the battle progressed a mantle of doom and agony covered the land

Our crimson sky was drenched by the blood of those brave warriors

Light pierced the darkness with a continuous whip of fury

The darkness screeched with a loud voice, boom, boom, boom…

After the battle was over, all was lost again… only silence remained,

A calm wind announced the end of another fight in an endless war,

Most warrior spirits vanished in a pink fog; freezing dew hugged our souls

One fearless warrior stood up, covered in the blood of friends and foes

He observed quietly, another battle ended; was peace achieved this time?

For centuries he has guarded the island and protected us, his children

As we stood next to him, we could feel his bravery, agony and strength

Centuries old tears softly ran through his scarred soul, caressing us

We shared the overwhelming feeling of his eternal duty and reverently thanked him.

He smiled; for an instant, our seven souls shared a bond with him and became one…

On this mythical island under the stars, we swore an eternal bond of friendship…

The first Milky Way

Tonight I'd like to share my first Milky Way photo!!!

Taken with my trusty Lumix G2 and the reliable Lumix 25mm 1.7 lens in Long Point, Ontario.

Hello! Hope July starts with success and happiness for all of us. Tonight I'd like to share my first Milky Way photo!!!

Taken with my trusty Lumix G2 and the reliable Lumix 25mm 1.7 lens in Long Point, Ontario.

It was a quiet and cool night, Ofelia was telling us a funny story while we enjoyed the best Poutine in Norfolk, courtesy on @the_chip_ship of course...

Darkness engulfed us and the stars started to brighten our night. It was peaceful, ethereal and magical.... I was in my happy place, surrounded by love, delicious food and bathed in light created billions of years ago...

I was able that night to capture a memory, an instant that intertwines today and before telling stories that happened long before us...

I always feel warmth watching this image, I hope you enjoy it too...

Love,

Raul

Long before us

Hello World!!! oh wow, this is the first post that we are publishing in social media. Why? Because we think it’s time. Ofelia and I have been crafting this space for some time and maybe, just maybe, we are ready to share it with the world.

It is nerve racking, but I think every first step on a journey is, and I hope you come along with us on this journey and enjoy the work we do. Thank you for coming along.

The image that I’m sharing with this post is one of the first night photos I took 10 years ago with my trusty Lumix G2 camera. I was on the Richmond Hill David Dunlap observatory watching a planetary alignment between the Moon, Mars and Saturn if I remember well. The photo is not technically great but tells a story that was written long before us. Ten years later and I am grateful of what I saw that night, it allowed me to spend the night connected with the stars, something I always loved and something I get now to share with my daughter Ofelia. We've had many adventures together after this one.

Expect many photos of all kind (astro, nature, street, portrait, etc), updates on our adventures and us having fun while doing our best. We will continue to learn and improve as we go along. Hopefully we will share with you something that is meaningful, entertaining and maybe something that makes your day a special one.

Want to see more amazing photos?

Check our website:

www.longbeforeus.com

We will try to provide blog posts like these ones to as many photos as we can, we hope you enjoy them too.

Love,

Ofelia & Raul
