Lake Crawford

Deep in a forest blessed by the Iroquoians there’s Lake Crawford, a mystical lake that tells us many stories…

Located in Ontario, Canada, the mystical Lake Crawford is a very special lake, a time capsule that has captured instants, stories, and dreams for hundreds of years…

Discovered deep in a forest blessed by the Iroquoians, you can reach the lake by following a beautiful trail that will immerse you in the lake’s magic. As you approach it, you can feel the presence of the same water sprites that observed our ancestors… today they are granting us visitors safe passage and a moment of peace and hope.

Ofelia and I visit the lake often and like to sit next to the shore and just dream about that song, sweet notes that someone used to sing in that same spot, long time ago… I wonder, is this another memory engraved on the immense layer of our time? Will the water sprites remember the moments we shared with them? Will they sing a song about our visit to new explorers, hundreds of years later?

Time seems to stop as I listen to Ofelia, singing that beautiful song, I shed some tears and close my eyes… The wind, shy and fast, disperses her sweet notes throughout the lake…  We know it is time, Ofelia and I hold our trusty Lumix cameras tightly, and feel the lake spirits smile, as they allow us to capture this instant, a moment in the life of the amazing lake.

About Lake Crawford:

Lake Crawford is a meromictic lake, which means the layers of water on the lake do not mix, making it the perfect time capsule as it is gives us a full picture of what happened in the past, for example researchers were able to determine the location of an Iroquoian settlement as corn pollen was found in a layer about 600 years old by researchers.

Here’s an incredible article of Lake Crawford by the Washington Post, highly recommended: https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/interactive/2023/anthropocene-geologic-time-crawford-lake/
